Original Post o You must post a potential research topic o You must identify the chapter of the course textbook that coincides with your topic. o You must state if you plan to do direct, indirect, or advocacy service learning. ? You must identify an organization you plan to work with OR if you are doing advocacy when/where/ etc you plan to do this work. 2. Response Posts o Provide substantive feedback to your peer. Begin with: Is their topic clear? Interesting? o Make suggestions to improve or narrow the topic. o Ask questions to brainstorm about the topic. Service Leadership Symposium: Every year the college hosts a service leadership symposium (Links to an external site.) where students get together to showcase their research and service work. It is like a mini conference, and it is always impressive. One of my favorite events each year! At the end of this research project you should have a phenomenal project to submit to the conference. Submitting your work is a requirement, while agreeing to participate is not but extremely encouraged. *Remember to ALWAYS cite your work! Any acts of plagiarism will result in a 0 for the entire assignment. Please review the Student Code of Conduct before submission. Example: For this research assignment I am interested in the U.S. Supreme Court. Specifically I am interested in the relationship between ideology and Supreme Court appointments. The chapter of the textbook that relates to my topic is chapter 13. Specifically section 13.4, which stated, " Currently, there are five justices who are considered part of the Court’s more conservative wing—Chief Justice Roberts and Associate Justices Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch, and Kavanaugh—while four are considered more liberal-leaning—Justices Ginsburg, Breyer, Sotomayor, and Kagan (Figure 13.10 (Links to an external site.)). Had the Merrick Garland nomination in March 2016 been allowed to proceed, or had the Democrats retained the presidency in 2016, the replacement for the spots on the court vacated in the wake of the death of Associate Justice Antonin Scalia in February 2016, or the retirement of "swing" vote Anthony Kennedy in July 2018, could have swung many key votes in a moderate or liberal direction. However, with Republican Donald Trump winning the election and the Republicans retaining Senate control, the Court has become more conservative" (p. 504). I plan to do advocacy service work. I think advocacy is most relevant for this topic as many people do not know about the Supreme Court and why they should care about it. I'd like to present my research findings to the academic community in order to contribute to the academic literature in a meaningful way. To do this I plan to host a public forum where we discuss the Supreme Court in our local community. I hope to do this work with Advocacy for Justice. (Links to an external site.)
